Minutes of May 16th - 2007 The parish of St-Pierre was created in 1877. Shortly after his participation in the Red River Resistance in 1870, Father Ritchot of Saint-Norbert gathered several of his parishioners together and led an expedition to this area along the Rat River, convinced that the land here was extremely fertile. Because this expedition took place around the Feast Day of Saint-Pierre, the saint's name was chosen for the new community. The first settlers were soon joined by several other Métis families plus French-Canadians from New England. The word "Jolys" was added to the town's name in honour of Father Jean-Marie Jolys, the parish's first priest, who was responsible for bringing a third group of immigrants to the town in 1885. Most of the early settlers were farmers, while others made cheese, were beekeepers or woodcutters.
